Walter J. Scott, MD, FACS – Chief of Thoracic Surgery

Dr. Walter J. Scott is the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Abington Jefferson Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. He joined Fox Chase Cancer Center in 2001 and was appointed Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Fox Chase in 2007. While at Fox Chase he directed the thoracic surgery program and was co-director of the lung cancer program until he was recruited by the Jefferson Health System in 2016.

Dr. Scott completed medical school, general and thoracic surgery residencies at the University of Chicago. He is certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Scott published numerous scientific articles and is also the author of Lung Cancer: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment, a book for patients and families. Dr. Scott was a leader in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and was one of the first surgeons to perform video-assisted (VATS) lung cancer surgery in Philadelphia. Dr. Scott has performed robotic-assisted surgery since 2012 for all types of thoracic cancer, including lung and esophageal cancers and surgery for thymomas. Currently he estimates that 80% of his surgical procedures are performed using the latest version of the surgical robot, the DaVinci Xi. In addition to the treatment of lung cancer, Dr. Scott has extensive experience treating esophageal cancer. As a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) panel on Gastric and Esophageal Cancer, Dr. Scott helped to write the guidelines for esophageal cancer treatment that are used by cancer centers throughout the United States.
