Aria Health’s accomplished cancer team already has built years of experience conducting “surgery” on patients using intricately delivered radiation that destroys cancer tissue with pinpoint accuracy. For this pioneering care – called stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS or SBRT) – Aria’s Cancer Center uses an advanced radiation-therapy machine that can effectively kill or reduce tumors in just one or a few treatments.
How does it work? Patients with a variety of types cancers can benefit from radiosurgery. The system uses radiologic imaging to precisely locate and target the tumor while the patient is on the treatment table, and then calculates the direction and angle of radiation treatment in three dimensions (in reference to a fixed point on the body) to achieve an exact location and a concentrated meeting point at which the beams intersect to destroy cancer tissue.
Who is it available for? Radiosurgery has years of established success against brain tumors but can treat cancer in any part of the body. Experts at Aria and other advanced centers now take advantage of this breakthrough technology against tumors in the lung, liver, and a variety of sites, as well as against vascular abnormalities. At Aria’s Torresdale campus, the experienced, highly trained, radiation oncology team became one of the first in the region to battle cancer with this leading-edge technique.
