Aria Health Signs Agreement with Capital Health

for Neurological Services

Capital Health today announced that it has signed an agreement with Aria Health for Capital Health to provide neurosurgical services to Aria and add the Pennsylvania health system to its neurosciences network. Aria Health will join Capital Health’s Neurosciences Network and Capital Health neurosurgeons will offer neurosurgical services locally at Aria’s campuses. Patients requiring more advanced, specialized brain and spine care will be transferred to Capital Health in Mercer County, NJ. Aria had previously sent its complex neurosurgical cases to Philadelphia.

As part of the agreement, Capital Health neurosurgeons Erol Veznedaroglu, MD, Kenneth Liebman, MD, Joseph Sherrill, MD, Lee Buono, MD and Mandy Binning, MD, will provide patients at Aria’s three hospitals with neurosurgical options for brain and spine conditions that can be managed locally. When a patient’s condition requires more advanced services, such as endovascular care for strokes or aneurysms, complex spinal procedures, or intensive care in a specialized neurosciences intensive care unit, patients will be transferred to Capital Health, through a one-call transfer  process which connects Aria physicians directly to the neurosurgeons at Capital Health.

“The goal for us is to help hospitals throughout the region provide care for patients with brain and spine conditions and to serve as a resource for more complex cases that require the expertise that a hospital that specializes in neurosciences can provide,” said Dr. Erol Veznedaroglu, Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Capital Health and director of the Capital Institute for Neurosciences and the Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center of NJ. “This is truly a partnership that prioritizes what is best for patients. For the patients we deal with time can be the enemy and having excellent front line care such as the care offered at a well-trained and educated hospital coupled with the resources of a specialized neurosciences tertiary care facility, is essential. Our agreement with Aria also enables patients to see neurosurgeons at their local hospital, provided by our neurosurgeons who have extensive training in their specialty.”

“Aria Health is excited to partner with Capital Health’s Neurosciences Network in Pennsylvania.” said Kathleen Kinslow, CRNA, EdD, MBA, President and CEO, Aria Health.  “The collaboration will bring advanced neuroscience services to our community.  Partnering with Capital Health Neurosciences Network is another way we are enhancing the high quality of care at Aria Health.”

Capital Health Regional Medical Center offers a 26 bed dedicated neuro intensive care unit, a dedicated neuro endovascular operating room and 24 hour access to some of the most experienced cerebrovascular neurosurgeons in the country. Capital Health Medical Center –Hopewell, opening November 6 of this year, will be the location of outpatient offices for the Capital Institute for Neurosciences and will also feature a hybrid neurosurgical operating room which allows neurosurgeons to perform both open and endovascular procedures in the same room.

The Capital Health Neurosciences Network is a collaborative group of participating health care facilities with whom Capital Health is working to continually improve the availability of advanced diagnostics and treatment for patients throughout the region with neurological disorders.

Member hospitals work closely with Capital Health and its Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center of New Jersey to provide neurologic care at the local level that allows patients to remain close to home for care except for cases where very specialized care is required and where a transfer to Capital Health is warranted. The network is an extension of Capital Health’s regional status as a premier referral center for some of the most critical patients suffering from conditions such as stroke, aneurysm, and other cerebrovascular emergencies.

As part of the agreement with Aria, Capital Health will work with the hospital system to serve as a comprehensive clinical subspecialty, research and educational resource and will work closely with them and their physicians to allow patients to remain in their community for treatment as long as medically appropriate. This will include providing Aria with specialty training and educational opportunities.  It will also include consulting with Aria’s team of orthopedic surgeons on cases related to spinal conditions.

Capital Health’s SCVCNJ serves as a regional referral center for complex cases that require specialized neurologic and neurosurgical care unavailable at other area hospitals and will be an extension of Aria’s neuroscience program, providing neurologic and neurosurgical care, consultative and interdisciplinary evaluation services, advanced diagnostic testing, complex neurosurgical care and access to clinical trials taking place at Capital Health.

Emergency departments from around central and southern New Jersey and into Bucks County, depend on Capital Health to provide a higher level of care to patients suffering from complex brain conditions that require very specialized care and treatment. For instance, patients who enter a hospital through the emergency department and are not candidates for, or are unresponsive to pharmacologic stroke treatments, may be candidates for intra-arterial therapies, such as mechanical thrombolytics, offered at Capital Health and may benefit from being transferred. Capital Health offers a unique one-call transfer process that gets patients to its Regional Medical Center and under the direct care of specially trained neurosurgeons and intensive care team members more rapidly.
