5 Steps to Eating Right

  • Eat less fat. Reduce your total fat intake to 30 percent or less of total calories. Reduce saturated fat to less than 10 percent of daily calories.

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables. Try for five to nine servings a day.

  • Take in more complex carbohydrates. Eat six or more servings of breads, pastas, grains, cereals and legumes each day.

  • Eat only a moderate amount of protein. You're on target if your diet contains 10 percent to 20 percent protein.

  • Reduce the salt in your diet, particularly as you get older. Sensitivity to salt or sodium increases with age, increasing your risk of developing or exacerbating high blood pressure.
