Frankford Hospital Rows to Success at Dragon Boat Festival

On Saturday, October 4, Frankford Hospital had four teams participate in the Philadelphia Dragon Boat Festival held along Boat House Row. Congratulations to the paddlers on their hard work and support of the event. Special thanks from all the teams go to Frankford Hospital Administration who supported the cost of the boats and refreshments, and to the Frankford Hospital Medical Staff for donating life jackets and seat pads for the event.

Marking its fourth year in the Dragon Boat Festival, the "Save-A-Life" team, consisting of representatives fromFrankford Hospital's Cancer Center, Women's Health Program and other clinical and support departments, paddled to raise approximately $5,000 for our Cancer Center.

The "Critical Crew" team included staff from the Torresdale Campus Intensive Care Unit (ICU). For the second time, the ICU won a gold medal ("H" Division) in the competition. This year's team raised over $7000 for two worthy causes.

A portion of the funds will support the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

"The Cutters" included staff from the Operating Room and Perioperative Services at the Torresdale Campus who rowed to raise awareness of and research funding for Huntington's disease. It was the team's second year paddling. Once again this year the Cutters paddled to raise money to help increase awareness about Huntington's disease, which has affected one of their own nurse's lives. Her husband lived with the disease for many years, but unfortunately died late last year from complications related to the disease. This year's race was dedicated to his memory. Huntington's disease is a genetic disorder that not only affects the person who is afflicted, but also effects families, friends, and communities.

Also joining the fun were "The Lifesavers," a team of nurses, physicians, technicians and clerks from the Torresdale Emergency Department. Team captain Loretta Lee, RN, led the 25 member team in its first venture on the water. The team rowed for the Trauma Department and plans to use the money towards patient education materials.
