Aria Health School of Nursing offers a variety of financial-aid programs to assist students in meeting their educational goals.  Financial aid may be offered in the form of grants, scholarships, loans, or employment, and is funded through federal, state, institutional, or private organizations.  Grants and scholarships are considered gift aid and do not need to be repaid.  Loans, which must be repaid, are usually offered at a low interest rate and have an extended repayment period.

Financial-Aid Application Process
Applying for financial aid has never been easier.  Please follow the steps below to apply for financial aid at the Aria Health School of Nursing:

STEP 1:  Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  Make sure you enter our federal school code (009723) on the FAFSA to ensure that your information is released to the Financial Aid Office at Aria Health School of Nursing.

A Federal PIN is required to electronically sign your FAFSA.  (A parent will also need a PIN if you are considered a dependent student).  Your PIN will serve as your identifier to allow access to personal information in various U.S. Department of Education systems.  You can obtain a PIN online at www.pin.ed.gov.

Note: Students that complete the FAFSA may be randomly selected for a review process called verification.  If you are selected for verification, you will be required to submit a federal tax return transcript from the IRS along with a Verification Worksheet to the Financial Aid Office at Aria Health School of Nursing.  If you are considered a dependent student, your parent(s) will also have to submit a federal tax return transcript from the IRS.  If you are selected for verification, the Financial Aid Office will notify you by mail.  You can request an IRS Tax Return Transcript by calling the IRS at 1-800-906-9946.

STEP 2:  If you are interested in borrowing a Federal Direct Stafford Loan, you must sign the Master Promissory Note (MPN) online at www.StudentLoans.gov. Your Federal PIN is required.  The MPN is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education.  It also explains the terms and conditions of your loan(s).  Federal Direct Stafford Loans are low-interest loans for students to help pay for the cost of education.

STEP 3:  If you decide to borrow a Federal Direct Stafford Loan, you must also complete an Entrance Counseling session online at www.StudentLoans.gov.  The Entrance Counseling session will provide you important information before your loan is disbursed, and this session is required for all first time Federal Direct Stafford loan borrowers.

Types of available Financial Aid:

PELL Grant
The U.S. Department of Education uses a standard formula to determine eligibility for Pell Grants.  This formula produces an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number, which will determine if the student is eligible for a Pell Grant.  Pell Grant recipients must be undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's degree, must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen and must have a high school diploma or a GED.  The maximum Pell Grant for the 2014-15 award year is $5,730.

PHEAA Grant
The Pennsylvania State Grant Program provides grants to eligible Pennsylvania residents in need of financial assistance to help them afford the costs of higher education.  PHEAA State Grant eligibility is calculated in accordance with the federal Need Analysis Formula and Pennsylvania State Grant policies.

To be eligible for a PHEAA Grant, you:
  • must be a Pennsylvania resident for at least 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the filing date of the FAFSA application (exclusive of any period of time the student spent enrolled in a Pennsylvania postsecondary educational institution.);
  • must be a graduate of an approved high school or have a GED;
  • must meet criteria for financial need;
  • must maintain satisfactory academic progress;
  • must not have previously earned a bachelor's degree or its equivalent;
  • and must not be in default or have a claim of default pending on an educational loan.

A loan from the U.S. Department of Education made on the basis of the student's financial need and other specific eligibility requirements.  The Federal Government does not charge interest on these loans while borrowers are enrolled at least half-time, during a six-month grace period, or during authorized periods of deferment.  The interest rate on Subsidized Stafford Loans for Undergraduates is 4.66% effective July 1, 2014.

Direct PLUS Loans
PLUS loans are available to credit-worthy parents of dependent students, regardless of financial need, and are borrowed directly through the U.S. Department of Education (no lender/bank required).  Parents can borrow up to the cost of attendance minus other financial aid received.  Repayment begins within 60 days of the last disbursement. PLUS Loans can be deferred upon request for up to four years while the student is enrolled half-time on the undergraduate level.  The interest rate on a Direct PLUS Loan is fixed at 7.21% effective July 1, 2014.

Alternative Loans
Various alternative student loan programs are available to assist students who may need additional financing.  Students may borrow up to the cost of attendance, minus other financial aid received.  Loan approval is generally based on creditworthiness and ability to repay.  If you are interested in borrowing an Alternative Loan, please contact the Financial Aid for a list of various alternative loans lenders.
