Open surgery for excision of the thyroid and thyroid masses involved in making a large 5-to-6 inch incision across the patient’s neck to expose and remove the thyroid.

With the da Vinci Si Surgical System, Robert M. Golub, MD, FACS, can instead make incisions as small as 5cm on the armpit on the same side of the thyroid.
