Burn Treatment Know-How

Most superficial burns are caused by the sun, fire or other heat source. Thin or superficial burns (called first-degree burns) are red and painful. They swell a little. They turn white if you press on them. The skin over the burn may peel off in one to two days. These burns can be treated safely at home, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Soak the burn in cool water. Don't apply ice or butter. Apply a skin-care product such as aloe vera or an antibiotic ointment, then cover the burned area with a dry gauze bandage. See a doctor if the burn covers a large area of skin.
